We opened the doors to our birth center 10 years ago! In that time we've cared for hundreds of families here in Humboldt county. In the fall of this year, we'll be moving to Eureka in order to be closer to Providence St. Joseph Hospital. We're in the process of building a beautiful Birth Sanctuary for our community and we need your help to make our vision a reality.

A Letter from the Midwives:

Beloved Community,

We are writing to you with a few pieces of very exciting news and to ask for your support in an fast-approaching project that will be life changing for our community.

We are raising funds to build a new Birth Sanctuary in Eureka — a space designed to honor and care for birthing people and their families. Every dollar you give brings us closer to creating a place where new life can be welcomed with safety, compassion, and joy. We need $150,000 per birth room and $150,000 for a community space, and we’re inviting you to invest in this vision with us.

How we treat birthing people is a direct reflection of our values as a society. When we provide thoughtful care, real resources, and safe, beautiful spaces for birth, we are living the belief that families matter, and everyone deserves to be supported through this transformative moment.

We are thrilled to share that we have purchased and are in the process of renovating a new property on Harrison Avenue in Eureka. This half-acre space will be home to our office, two (and hopefully three!) fully equipped birth rooms, a garden for families to walk and labor in, and a classroom and community space.

We’ve already secured a construction loan to renovate the main house and build two birth rooms. But to fully realize this vision — to open with the capacity to serve more families and create a welcoming community hub — we need your help. Whether you can give $10 or $10,000, your support is a powerful act of care for birthing people in our community.

As many of you may have heard, we have been in negotiations with Partnership Health Plan for a few months now. It has always been our goal to accept Medi-Cal and Partnership but because of coding and facility limitations, we have not been able to until now. After the closure of Trillium Birth Center, it became glaringly obvious the need to increase maternal health care in our county.

When we reached out to Partnership with the hopes of collaborating to become more accessible, they were very willing to work with us. As is the nature of these things, there are still details to work out and we are unsure of the exact timeline of when we will be able to accept Partnership. At the latest, we anticipate we will be doing so by the time we open the doors to our new sanctuary in the fall of 2025, if not sooner. We anticipate that when we are able to start accepting Partnership and Medi-Cal that we will have a large increase in families that will choose to have their prenatal and postpartum care, and to deliver with us. We will only be able to accept a client load that is proportionate to our facility and staff capacities. With three birth rooms we’ll be able to serve much more of our community.

This entire project is truly grassroots. If our care has touched your life or the life of someone you love, please consider giving to help bring this sanctuary to life. If a financial donation isn’t possible, we welcome your help in the gardens, with setup, or by spreading the word. Every contribution — big or small — brings us closer.

Each room you help build will be a space of safety, rest, and transformation. If you or your family would like to fully sponsor a birth room, we would be honored to name it after you or a loved one.

There are many ways to donate! You can donate directly to us or make a tax-deductible donation through Humboldt Area Foundation (hafoundation.org/maternalsupport).

We are so incredibly grateful to each and every one of you for believing in this dream alongside us. Together, we can create a space that honors birth, supports families, and uplifts the entire community.

With love and gratitude,
The Moonstone Midwives
